Our Favourite Mountain Experience!

During your stay, why not treat yourself to a truly memorable evening in the mountains? One of our favourite experiences is a winter hike to Col de l'Izoard, followed by dinner at the Refuge Napoléon. It's a magical way to enjoy the mountains after most visitors have left for the day! Set off in the afternoon from Le Laus, near Cervières, and follow the pedestrian trail towards Col de l'Izoard, finishing at Refuge Napoléon (approximately 7 km). For an even more magical experience, you can also take a shortcut through the forest on snowshoes, although this route is more physically demanding.

We usually set off at around 3:45 pm, taking our time on the climb so we can enjoy the scenery and arrive in time for sunset. Mei isn't the fastest walker, so we make the most of the journey rather than rushing! At first, you might come across a few skiers and hikers heading back down. But before long, the mountains become wonderfully quiet... and it's just us and our two dogs. As we approach Refuge Napoléon, the sky begins to turn beautiful shades of pink. We always take a few moments outside to admire this incredible mountain sunset before heading inside. Guests are expected to arrive by 7 pm. As we usually get there a little early, we settle comfortably into the dining room, find a cosy corner for the dogs and enjoy an aperitif while waiting for dinner. A hearty mountain dinner awaits! The menu is simple but delicious, with a starter, a choice of main course (raclette, tartiflette or boîte chaude) and, of course, a selection of homemade fruit tarts for dessert. Good food, a friendly atmosphere and a cosy mountain refuge make for a wonderful evening. Before heading back out into the cold, we like to finish with a little Génépi! And then comes the adventure of the descent! If the snow is firm and well packed, you can make your way down by sled. However, when the trail is less steep, sledding can become quite difficult. For a little extra comfort, Mei always brings a cushion in her backpack! Personally, I prefer to snowboard back down, as it's much quicker. Walking back down is also possible, although it takes considerably longer.

To make the most of this experience, here are a few things worth remembering:

  • Book your table in advance: seating is limited, so reservations are essential.

  • Bring cash or a cheque: the refuge does not accept credit cards.

  • Dress warmly: make sure you have a hat, gloves and a warm jacket for the journey back down.

  • Bring a headlamp: check the batteries before setting off, as you'll be returning after dark.

Mountain Adventures Beyond the Ski Slopes!

Cross-Country Skiers Are Spoilt for Choice Too!

Montgenèvre and the surrounding valleys are a fantastic destination for cross-country skiing enthusiasts. Whether you're a beginner looking to discover the sport or an experienced skier in search of more challenging routes, you'll find trails to suit your level and expectations. The Montgenèvre Nordic Ski Area offers 15 km of groomed trails, with circuits for all abilities, from beginners to experienced cross-country skiers. The beautiful Clarée Valley offers an especially wonderful setting, with trails starting in Les Alberts, just 200 metres from our guesthouse, and continuing through Val-des-Prés and Névache. Enjoy peaceful forest trails and sunny open landscapes as you explore this magnificent valley. You'll also be spoilt for choice with the Nordic areas of Cervières, the stunning Fonts Valley and the Col de l'Izoard, each offering its own unique scenery and skiing opportunities. A little local tip about snow conditions: Les Alberts and Val-des-Prés are both located at around 1,400 metres in altitude, so cross-country skiing in these areas is generally best from January to February, depending on snow conditions. Outside this period, we recommend heading towards Névache, Montgenèvre, Cervières or the Col de l'Izoard, where conditions are often more favourable.

La Maïta – The Perfect Base for Cross-Country Skiing By choosing La Maïta Guesthouse, you'll enjoy easy access to all the Nordic ski areas in the surrounding valleys. Our central location makes it easy to explore different trails throughout your stay and discover a new favourite spot every day.

Whether you're looking for peaceful forest trails, sunny valley landscapes or more challenging Nordic routes, La Maïta is the perfect starting point for your cross-country skiing holiday in the Southern Alps!

For backcountry enthusiasts, it's particularly worth the trip! When snow conditions are right, the surrounding mountains offer an exceptional playground for off-piste adventures and unforgettable experiences. As with the French resorts, we recommend avoiding the busiest school holiday periods to enjoy quieter slopes and make the most of your day. At La Maïta, you're perfectly placed to explore the best of both worlds, with fantastic skiing opportunities in France and Italy just a short drive away!
